What do you think? Should chimpanzees be granted 'personhood'?
by fulltimestudent inthere's a current court case in ny which is hearing that question right now.
the precise issue is the continued captivity of two chimpanzees, (leo and hercules, names bestowed by humans) in a medical research laboratory at stony brook university.. i suggest that the application has some merit.
are not all of us "animals?

Outlaw, that PM looks like he's wearing the paper crowns that Burger King gives to children.

LoveUniHate Exams,
"If they're freed, and live elsewhere, should the chimps pay rent?"
They can be freed in the African forest.
As for personhood that is a question that really has no answer. For instance, and I realize they're extinct, are different species of human beings considered persons? How about Neandertals; Homo Heidelbergensis (more primitive as I go along); Homo Erectus; Australopithecus?

Freedom of speech can only guarantee an audience of one
by Brokeback Watchtower inin my house i feel that freedom of speech is important but it can only guarantee an audience of one.
i know women need to vent and i try to give them as much space as possible without interjecting any judgement on the validity of what is been vented in other words i give space for these events as best i could and try to listen with an open mind because there truely is a message there some where but i admit i'm a dense male to the female of our species.
but i tend to shy away from over venting and cringe at being subjected to them and so while a person has the right to free speech in my house they don't have the right to an audience of more than one.

Brokeback,
"...while a person has the right to free speech in my house they don't have the right to an audience of more than one."
Maybe I'm dense but I don't quite understanding why an audience of 2 or more is bad from your perspective. Also what kind of subject in their venting makes you cringe?

Anti-JW billboard going up in Texas
by sunny23 inthe first ever billboard has been crowd funded on reddit and will be going up.
i'm curious to know if it will cause a spark in any jw's who already have questions or doubts and lead them to research into the child abuse cases and lead them to the thought that the wt and gb are not inspired or gods mouthpiece.
at the very least it will provide people a topic of conversation and questions to the jw's who knock on their door: "so whats this whole sex abuse in kingdom halls thing about i saw on the billboard down the road?

Simon,
"Here's why I very much doubt it:"
"It risks turning an incredibly minor issue into a more news-attention grabbing one. I don't think they would ever risk doing something so stupid and likely to be discovered for such little benefit."
They would probably think that they would not be tracked down and discovered. While I don't know much about computers and the Internet I assume that such discovery would be difficult.

"Never push a Loyal person, to the point, they no longer, give a DAMM"
Ironically it's the most loyal who make the worse enemy when they turn on those they had loyalty to.

Still waiting ... since 1975 !
by Amazing inwhat have i done with my life since 1975?
became a jw in the late 1960s ... looked forward to 1975 as early as 1968 ... so, out of a sense of duty and spirit inspired organizational hounding ... when 1974 arrived, i sold the house, sold the car, sold the wife and kids ... then moved to where the great are needed ... 1975 came and went ... .
so did ... 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 walk away from the organization ... 1993, 1994 then it was 80 years of a special mighty generation since 1914 ... finally, 20 years later it was 1995 when i was forcibly disassociated by wts legal department ... 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 ... yikes!

I once thought that they would have dropped 1914 but now I realize that would sink the keystone to their doctrines and remove the aura of being a prophet. They did drop 1975 because it isn't necessary to their doomsday teachings. That's why they were forced to come up with this nonsense about overlapping generations.
I heard they even have dropped their idea that the creative 'days' were 7,000 years old which was the foundation of 1975 chronology. Now, 2 overlapping generations after 1975, most JWs haven't even been there to witness that fiasco. The generation that witnessed the 1975 debacle is getting older. Oops, that includes many of us.
